Government Update

May 7, 2020

Hello,

I hope this update finds you doing well!

If you are a sophomore or junior, you need to complete the Fourth Nine Weeks’ assignments through Moodle or a paper packet.  Please email or call me if you are doing the paper packet.

For those of you on Moodle,  I have entered the grades for the Executive and Judicial Branches. For those quizzes you have NOT attempted, you will receive a grade of 0. Once you have completed a quiz, I will change the 0 to a grade. The Units on Civil Liberties and Civil Rights were opened on Monday, May 4th. Civil Liberties has 4 quizzes, and Civil Rights has 3 quizzes.   There is also a test on these two units. I will not begin entering a grade of zero on these assignments until Tuesday, May 12th.

For those of you completing the Paper Packet, you will receive a grade of 0 in Synergy until I receive your work.  The packets are due Friday, May 15th. If you want to keep track of how you are doing, as you finish the quizzes, email me at joneill@rcps.info with your answers. For example, the Executive Branch Quiz 1 has 15 questions, you take the quiz, write your answers on your paper, and then email me the title of the quiz, and your answers numbered 1 – 15 (1. A 2. C, etc.).  I will grade your quiz and send you an email letting you know the question (s) you missed. You will then have an opportunity to resubmit your answer choices. Let’s say that you had 10 correct and 5 wrong on Quiz 1 (67%). You review the incorrect responses and send me your changes. If you have 3 additional correct answers (13/15), I will change your score in Synergy to 87%.

Please let me know through email, joneill@rcps.info , or my cell phone, if you have questions or need assistance. My phone hours are Monday – Friday, 9:00 – 3:30. Please leave a message if I do not answer.

Best,

Mrs. O’Neill

Hello to all! I hope you are doing well, and I still miss you.

If you are:  1) a senior; and, 2) have a passing grade for first semester and third nine weeks, you have completed the requirements for Virginia/US Government. Congratulations! (*If you have any doubts as to whether this rule applies to you, please contact your guidance counselor).

For everyone else, my sophomores and juniors, you must complete the fourth nine weeks’ assignments either through a paper packet or Moodle. The fourth nine weeks’ grade will average with your third nine weeks to calculate your second semester grade. Let me give two examples of the importance of completing the assignments for the fourth nine weeks. Student A has an 80 average for the third nine weeks and does not complete his/her assignments for the fourth nine weeks. Student A’s average for second semester would be a 40/ F. Student B has an 80 average for the third nine weeks and completes his/her assignments for the fourth nine weeks with a grade of 60. Student B’s average for the second semester would be a 70/C.

For those students choosing to complete their fourth nine weeks’ assignments with a paper packet, you may pick up the packet starting Monday, April 20, from the William Fleming Main Office. Office hours are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 9:00 to 1:00. Packets must be returned by Friday, May 15th. Make sure you put your name, my name, and the class name, Government, on your work. You must also email me and let me know that you selected the paper packet option. At that time, I will reply with my cell phone number. This is to allow you to contact me personally if you are having any difficulties, and it provides me a means to monitor your progress.

For those students choosing to complete their fourth nine weeks’ assignments online, you will use Moodle. You may start your work today. This must be completed sequentially. Other details including deadlines and Zoom or Moodle Collaborate sessions are provided on the Government Share Class Moodle Home Page. Please email me, so I can give you my cell phone number if you are having any difficulties.
